A Day at the Beach with Pheebs: Chasing Waves and Playing Tag

A one-on-one beach adventure filled with salty air, sandy paws, cautious curiosity, and one unforgettable game of tag.

Dog-Friendly Adventures Beach Day Life with Pheebs

Taking four dogs to the beach sounds like an adventure, right? Well, this time, it was just me and Pheebs; a rare chance for some one-on-one bonding with my curious, cautious Shepherd/Husky/Malinois mix. While Pheebs isn’t the biggest fan of water, I thought she’d enjoy the fresh air and open space. Little did I know, we’d end up giving the entire beach a show.

The Arrival

We hit the beach early in the morning, hoping to beat the crowd (and the heat). Pheebs, as always, was curious but skeptical, eyeing the waves like they might be planning something. I leashed her up with her trusty EzyDog Slip Lead, grabbed my beach bag, and we made our way to the sand.

At first, she stuck close to me, cautiously sniffing everything; driftwood, seaweed, even the foam bubbling up on the shore. When the water rushed in a little too close for her liking, she jumped back and gave me her signature ā€œWhat was that?!ā€ look.

The Great Escape

Things were going smoothly until the leash slipped out of my hands while I was adjusting my bag. In the blink of an eye, Pheebs was off, her tail high and wagging, ready for the best game of tag she’s ever played.

I called her name, but Pheebs had other plans. She sprinted down the shore, zig-zagging between groups of beachgoers who, to my surprise, didn’t try to stop her. Instead, they just stepped aside, laughing as this streak of energy barreled past them.

At one point, she paused to sniff a little boy’s sandcastle before darting off again. I finally caught up to her when she stopped to investigate a flock of seagulls. She looked so pleased with herself, like she’d just won some kind of beach Olympics.

Finding Her Groove

After the chase (and a heartfelt apology to every sunbather in her path), Pheebs finally started to settle down. I laid out a towel near the shoreline, and to my surprise, she came over, plopped down, and let out a deep sigh.

For the next hour, she watched the waves roll in, her ears perking up every time the water got close but not quite touching her. Eventually, she inched closer, lying just at the edge of the tide, where the water lapped at her paws. It was like she’d made peace with the ocean—on her terms, of course.

Lessons Learned (for Both of Us)

Taking Pheebs to the beach was a mix of chaos and calm, but I wouldn’t trade it for anything. I learned that while she might not be a fan of swimming, she does love the sand, the salty breeze, and a good run when she thinks no one’s watching (or, in this case, when everyone was).

For next time, I’ll make sure her leash is double-secured, but I’ll also give her more time to adjust to the water. Pheebs has a way of doing things at her own pace, and that’s something I’ve come to appreciate about her.

Beach Essentials for Pheebs

By the end of the day, Pheebs was tired, sandy, and (dare I say it?) maybe even a little fond of the beach. We headed home with a car full of sand and a memory full of laughs. If there’s one thing I know for sure, it’s that life with Pheebs is never boring—and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Until the next adventure,

The Brunette
